About Fudan University Fudan University School of Journalism, founded in 1929, is the standard-bearer of journalistic education and was the first to offer journalism courses in China. In June, 1988, it was established as the country’s first separate journalism school. Having remained true to the motto “to research and practice” given by Mr. Chen Wangdao, a respected educationist and the founder of the then-Journalism Department, the School follows a good tradition of opening to the world and has made great achievements in various fields like textbook development, teaching and professional research. The School has 4 departments journalism, broadcasting, communications and advertising. It offers a variety of rigorous academic programs, including master's degrees in journalism, communications, broadcasting arts and advertising and doctor’s degrees in journalism, communications and broadcasting. Furthermore, it provides the only postdoctoral program in journalism and communications in the country and has set up the Information & Communications Research Center, a Key Research Institute of Humanities and Social Sciences in universities authorized by the Education Ministry. Thus it became the only journalism school in China that has a full range of journalism education from undergraduate to postdoctoral level. The Current Dean of the School is Prof. Huang Zhixiao, and Vice Dean is Prof. Meng Jian, Prof. Huang Hu and Associate Prof. Yu Zhenwei. The School has now 50 faculty staff, including 21 professors and associate professors and 7 doctoral advisors. Among the nationally known faculty are the leader of Journalism Branch, Committee of Academic Degree, the State Council of China, the Vice Chairman of the Journalism Education Supervisory Committee of China, and the Vice President of the Journalism Education Association of China. The School has approximately 800 students, including 536 undergraduates, 153 master candidates, 58 doctoral candidates and 25 students from Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan. The School also boasts abundant publication resources and advanced teaching and research equipment. The photography laboratory, broadcasting laboratory and electronic publishing laboratory combined have a total area of 550 sq.m. and are furnished with equipment worth several million. The 354-square-meter Journalism Library features a collection of over 30,000 books (including 2,200 foreign-language books) and 26,500 volumes of newspapers and periodicals in bound edition, including more than 1,800 newspapers published before 1949, many of which are rare and valuable. The school attaches much importance to exchanges and cooperation with overseas counterparts. Over the past 10 years, it has established academic relationships with the related institutions in the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Russia, Japan, Australia, Canada, Sweden, South Korea, Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, Taiwan and Hong Kong, and has received dozens of overseas students and visiting scholars. The School also regularly sponsors international academic symposiums and sends faculty to teach and visit overseas with a view to broadening horizons and promoting mutual understanding. The School has long been committed to the tradition of “face the world and strive to be a top-ranking journalism school.” Even at the foundation of the Journalism Department, the first director, Prof. Xie Liuyi proposed an objective of “expect to compete with counterparts in foreign countries.” In 1935, the then-Journalism Department hosted a World Newspapers Exhibition displaying as many as 2,000 newspapers, which was hailed as “a pioneering act in China’s journalism history.” The School first enrolled Journalism Department master’s candidates in 1961, making itself a pacesetter in graduate programs in the country. In 1981 and 1984, it created the earliest master’s degree and doctor’s degree programs respectively. In 1997, it added master’s degrees and doctor’s degrees in communications to its programs. In 1994, it set up a postdoctoral research facility. As it has trained thousands of undergraduates and graduates over the past 70 years, its name has become internationally famous. |
About Columbia University, School of International & Public Affairs Columbia University was founded in 1754 as King’s College by royal charter of King George II of England. After the independence of the United States, the college was re-named Columbia University. Columbia is one of the top academic and research institutions in the world. It includes 16 schools and 69 departments. The faculty of approximately 4,000 teaches more than 23,000 students from over 150 countries each year, thus creating a large and ever-growing alumni network. The School of International Affairs was founded in 1946, in the aftermath of World War II. It originated in dynamic regional institutes that, with an interdisciplinary vision bold for its day, drew on Columbia’s renowned faculties in history, economics, political science, linguistics, and other traditional fields. The mission of the School was to foster understanding of regions of vital interest and to prepare diplomats, officials, and other professionals to meet the complexities of the postwar world. During the 1950s and 1960s, SIA developed a national and international profile as a leading center for educational and research programs in area studies, security, and international relations. By 1967, the School was home to eight regional institutes, covering nearly every part of the globe. In 1981, the School was renamed the School of International and Public Affairs (SIPA). Over the past two decades, the faculty has expanded with the addition of a first-rate SIPA-based faculty, among them practitioner-scholars who bring their professional experience into the classroom. SIPA continues to strengthen links to Columbia’s professional schools and academic departments and to find new ways to engage the enormous resources and challenges of the nation’s largest and most international city. To accommodate the needs of working professionals, SIPA has added two mid-career programs: the Executive MPA Program—the first offering of the Picker Center for Executive Education—and the Program in Economic Policy Management, which is partially funded by the World Bank. The ActinDean of the School is Professor John H. Coatsworth.
